This summer in Coral Springs, Florida, campers at both sessions of MusicMakers! Summer Camp raised $1,250 to benefit “Believe Music Heals” and the Donice Rufus Memorial Music Scholarship. Since 1998, campers have helped a host of local charities, including Autism & Music, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Broward Humane Society, Maya’s Hope, Project Semicolon, Surfside Rescue Foundation, and many more. In 2024, camp staff chose to benefit Believe Music Heals through Penny Wars and Finale Concert door donations. “Many people experience tough times in life when they don’t know how to process their emotions,” stated camp Founder, 33-year veteran music educator and Broward County Arts Teacher of the Year Nicole Greggs. “Believe Music Heals shares our mission, which is to help people learn to handle stress in healthy way by making music.” Greggs went on to say that Music helps kids coming from diverse backgrounds come together to create harmony, thereby building understanding, respect, and compassion for all people.”
MusicMakers! also funds a college scholarship for students studying Music after high school. Named after former Camp Woodwinds Instructor Donice Rufus, who taught elementary general music at Ramblewood Elementary for 30 before passing away in 2011, the award is open to past campers and counselors, and has an August 1 annual deadline.
