Who We Are
MusicMakers! Inc. is a nonprofit corporation that was founded in 1998 as MusicMakers! Summer Camp by lifelong Coral Springs resident and Broward County music educator Nicole M. Greggs. She is assisted by several additional instructors, administrative staff and volunteers.
High school volunteers log over 200 hours per summer in service hours and are placed in their area of experience to best assist campers and to grow their own talents. Volunteer counselors assist instructors and ensure a smooth camp experience for all.
All instructors and volunteers are vetted and Level 2 background screened (which includes fingerprinting and character references). View the Meet the Staff page for our current staff roster.
In 2022, MusicMakers! was one of 15 small businesses to make the national shortlist for a $25,000 Amazon Small Business Grant, and ended up winning the National Grand Prize! We’ve survived a lot in our 25 years going… from the loss of our phenomenal woodwinds instructor Donice Rufus in 2011, to moving our camp base from Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to Coral Springs Charter School in 2012, due to fallout from the housing market crash, to the loss of former camper Gina Montalto in the MSD shootings in 2017, to the pandemic of 2020 and its aftermath. But through it all, our belief in the importance of music education for all kids has never wavered. Music connects people. Music heals and we all need it.
What We Do
MusicMakers! Summer Camp (aka MusicMakers!, Inc.) strives to develop musicianship, character, and respect for others, within a safe and secure environment, in order to ignite a lifelong interest in music-making and an informed appreciation of the value of music education.
RATIONALE
- The study of music lays the foundation for academic achievement by developing sustained concentration, expressive capabilities, & perseverance. These skills are then transferred to all other academic studies.
- The prolonged study of music has been repeatedly shown to dramatically increase student achievement on standardized tests.
- Playing or singing music stimulates both sides of the brain simultaneously, thereby strengthening a person’s overall thinking ability.
- Sharing music with others educates, cheers, and communicates compassion for others.
Donations at our finale concerts and recitals are given to a local charity chosen annually by staff and campers. Since 2012, we have assisted the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, the Donice Rufus College Music Scholarship Fund, the Coral Springs High School Steven Hoyos Memorial Band Fund, Wounded Warrior Foundation, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Broward County Humane Society, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, Project Semicolon, Surfside Relief Fund, and Maya’s Hope… with over $6.000 in good will contributions.
