Chorus at PPE: Auditioning and Registering

PPE Chorus members are not “auditioned” in the traditional manner of allowing each child to sing alone. Instead, vocal screenings are completed school-wide using well-known familiar songs (America “My country ’tis of thee…” and/or the echo song “No More Pie”). Songs are reviewed in general music class. Then, students sing while Mrs. Greggs listens to hear if individuals are singing in head voice on the correct pitches. Scores are recorded for general music data purposes and are used in grades 3-5 in the overall ranking of each student.

Once vocal screenings are complete, Mrs. Greggs evaluates students based on FSA test scores for gr 4/5 or academic achievement status for 3rd graders; effort and participation in Music class; Music Bee test scores from last year (for returning PPE students only); report card grades from last year (No 3’s, D’s, or F’s allowed); and behavior. For 2023-24, 72 students were invited to participate. All students not invited have been placed on a Waiting List.

At monthly PPSBA meetings, Mrs. Greggs presents information about why participating in music making improves student learning. Parents also learn what is involved in being in Chorus (expectations for behavior, attendance, having materials/bringing folders, arrival and dismissal, uniforms, fundraising, field trips, performances, Sing-a-Thon’s, etc.) Returning parents hear of changes to various policies and mentor incoming first-time member families. The first rehearsal of the year is usually held in early September. In addition to these meetings, the chorus website and our Facebook page are excellent sources of current information.

If you received an invitation to join the Plantation Park Singers Chorus, complete the online registration. NO PAPER FORMS ARE ACCEPTED. PLEASE PROVIDE AT LEAST ONE RELIABLE EMAIL ADDRESS TO RECEIVE CORRESPONDENCE FROM MRS. GREGGS. Communication is done electronically.
